Walkthrough for The Escaping Habit by Jack Lockerby Written by Richard Bos First, a few notes. To start with, this is a PAWed game for the ZX Spectrum. Therefore, words are significant to five letters rather than the more usual Quill's four. Also, be careful: unusually, the word "IN" is not the same thing as "INTO". You must put objects INTO containers, not IN them, and you go IN buildings, not INTO. ("INSIDE" isn't recognised at all.) You are on a time schedule in this game. Not only do you have a deadline (probably literally), but the daily routine in the camp takes its course whatever you do - and you'd better comply with regulations! This schedule is not random, so the walkthrough below does take it into account, but if you want to follow your own path and just refer to this text for some puzzles (or want to deviate from the walkthrough just to try a few things), make sure that you are ready to drop everything and present for inspection whenever required. Note as well that there are guards patrolling the camp who will arrest you if you are caught doing something illegal. Obviously, climbing over the fence in plain daylight is fatal. However, it is also not allowed to carry anything on your person, so if you have to move any object around, you're going to have to take care not to let them spot you doing so. This may involve not taking the shortest route to your destination, but for some objects there is a better solution. The guards' location _does_ seem to be random, so the route below cannot be exact, but you should have enough wiggle space to evade them. Obviously, since this is a walkthrough, spoilers are rife below. I'm not taking you past every single clue and sight - in fact, because the game does rely so much on timing, I'm not giving you any. If you want to explore on your own, examining objects is sometimes helpful for providing clues. HELP is not. Right, time to get out of here. Go north, then west five times. Follow the monk. Take the bible he drops, go into the church and give the bible to the monk. Go in to the confession box, confess (for some useful clues) and drop the bible - it will be safe here, and you're not allowed to carry it around the camp even though it was given to you honestly! Go out into the church, and out again. Go north thrice and west twice. Look behind hut to see what happened there. Get the pickaxe and the spade. Go east four times, crawl (and you must use that verb) under the theatre, drop all and go south. Go west twice, south twice, and in. Examine the dishes and take the battery. No, I'm not going to tell you how you know they're there, but they're easy to find out. If you don't want shortcuts, don't read walkthroughs! Put the battery into your pockets. Go out, east, south and in, then north thrice and up. Feel the rafter, get your battery and put it into the torch (which is what you "got something"ed from the rafter). Go down, north and east. Examine the bunk and take the crowbar. Go south four times, west and out, then east, north twice, west, north and east. That odd little detour was necessary to evade a guard, who would other- wise have put you into solitary, ending the game. As explained above, you may not need it - or, indeed, may need one at a different point. In my game, I needed this detour. You'll have to adapt your path as necessary. Crawl under the theatre again and get everything. Break the floorboards. Examine the soil and lift the framework. Go down, turn on your torch and drop everything. Go back up and south. Now wait for meal time at 8:00 - there isn't enough time left before then to do anything significant. You restart the game from the cookhouse. From there, go south, west twice, in to your hut, north twice and east. Take a slat, go north and west twice, take another slat, south twice, take a slat. Go south and east, then out, east and north thrice, crawl under the theatre and go down. Drop the slats, then take everything except the slats. Dig, go south, and drop everything. Go back north. Note that in this game, as in most PAWed games, it's not dangerous to move in the dark. Go up, south, north and west thrice. Something will happen. Examine the fence, then examine the jacket. Put the cigar into your pocket. Go south thrice. You will hear a guard shout for the roll call, so go east twice to the square. Go east, in and west. Take a slat and go north. Examine this bunk, get the book and put it into your pocket. Go north twice and get slat, east twice and south and get slat, then go south twice, west and out. Go north twice and crawl under the theatre, then go down and south. Drop the slats, get all but slats, and dig. Go south and drop everything. Go north twice, up and south. Go west, south and in to the last hut. There, go east and north, get slat, north twice, get slat, west. Crawl under the table and examine it. Put the knife into your pocket. Go south, north and west, and get the final slat. Go south four times, east and out, north and east. Crawl under the theatre again. Go down, then south twice. Drop slats, get all but slats, dig, south, dig up, and drop everything. Phew! There'll be plenty of danger to come, but that, at least, is the heavy manual labour done with. Go up. Examine the shelves. Take the sandals, wear them, and drop your boots. Go down, north three times through the dark tunnel, and up twice. Get the knife, cut the curtain, get it and drop your knife. Go east, examine the room, get beard and put it into your pockets. Go west, down and south, then west four times, south and in. Get the book from your pocket, give it, then read the new book and drop it. Go out, south thrice, and in. Get the cigar and give it to the guard; give the curtain to the prisoner. He asks you what to make. You need to enter your answer as a straight command, without SAY or quotation marks: MAKE HABIT. He tells you it shouldn't take long; in fact, it takes ten turns. Wait those ten turns, then take the habit and wear it. Now go out, east twice, north and in, then east into the other side of the confessional box. Remove the habit, get all, and also get the beard from your pockets. Spread the gum on the beard and drop the tube. Wear the beard, the cross and the habit. You're starting to look rather like the monk already - you need just one more accessory. Go west and in, and get the bible. Go out twice and north, then west five times to freedom!
